Flowing Dutchman Perth Visit

The Flowing Dutchman Perth Visit. In May 2022, I had the pleasure of meeting Harbert Egberts in Perth, Australia. Harbert Egberts, aka The Flowing Dutchman, founded the Dutch Flow Academy, a platform that teaches essential skills for mastering momentum with rotational training equipment.

A shared interest in the Ancient Arts

Our conversation quickly turned to our shared interest in the ancient arts of swinging clubs, meels, and maces. Our growing collective knowledge of these practices made for an engaging discussion about technique, mastery, and effective teaching methods for students. We have both travelled extensively, yet independently, to India in search of knowledge about these ancient art forms. I have also travelled twice to Iran and attended many Zurkhaneh to further my understanding of these practices.

During our meeting, we discussed that the name “Indian Clubs” is a misnomer. Many people are unaware that this art form originated in India and was influenced by the heavier clubs seen there. The English army created Indian Clubs in India as a platform for military training exercises. Upon returning home, demobbed soldiers introduced club swinging to England, quickly spreading throughout Europe and across the Atlantic to the United States. One hundred fifty years ago, club swinging was highly popular in the West until its decline in the 1930s. Their enduring legacy revived in recent years.

‘Indian Clubs’ should have been called ‘English Clubs’, but that did not happen as the words Indian Clubs evoked the exotic romanticism of India, which was very popular during the mid to late 1800s.
