Varanasi Gada

This is a collection of Gada Mace photographs I took during my many visits to the Akharas of Varanasi.

Colours of the Akharas

The Varanasi Gada is made in all shapes, sizes and weights, they are painted in the colours of the respective Akharas that they belong to. Some are made from concrete and others are made from stone. The handles are generally made from bamboo, and metal pipe for Gadas made with a metalhead, usually very heavy.

Gada Mace Construction

The CONCRETE Gada is made using the traditional CLAY POT method.  The head of the Gada is held in position by wooden wedges, this method is known to come apart. It is strongly recommended that metal anchors are fitted to the handle, and then pushed into the wet concrete for security. This is explained in detail in the instructions. For more information about making your own Gada the traditional way, see the link below.

Hi Dale, I hope that your torn rotator cuff is on the mend. Please keep me posted on how you get on with rehab using Indian Clubs.
Great to hear that you are making Gadas. What weights have you made? I have learnt a lot about using the Gada on my last trip, and I think that one of the most important points is not to go heavy until you have completely mastered the movements, please consider this in view of your injury. I have recorded an enormous amount of video during my recent trip and will post as time allows.
          All the best.
          Paul

Paul, Sorry about the delayed response. I am taking it really slow with the torn rotator cuff. My son Roger came up to Michigan from Ohio (Atomic Athletic) to show me some stretching exercises as not to do any damage to the sholder.

I have finished the Gadas including the paint jobs. They weigh 23.3 lbs, 17.9 lbs, and 15.2lbs . Roger took the 2 heaviest back to Ohio and I kept the 15.2 pounder.

I have pictures but am having trouble posting them. Can this be done here?

The best to you , Dale

            Hi Dale,
Thank you for the pictures of your Gadas, they look great. I am sure you will get a lot of pleasure from singing the one you plan to keep. Please take baby steps when you start, a few swings each way, and remember to change your hands. Right over left, and left over right. All the best with you rehab. Paul
