Indian Club Combinations and Transitions
There are 9 clips in this video that show some of my favourite combinations and transitions using Indian Clubs, the Hungarian Hammer, Mace-Gada and Persian Meels.
Indian Clubs Terminology Explained
COMBINATION = a joining or merging of different circles in which the component elements are individually distinct.
For example, the classic heart shape is swung using two circles. Circle #1 is swung with a straight arm at the front of the body. Circle #2 is swung with a bent arm at the back of the body behind the shoulders.
TRANSITION = the process by which the athlete permanently changes the current circle pattern to another without stopping.
For example, in the heart shape swing, the athlete first swings Circle #1 at the front of the body. Then the club transitions to the back of the body to swing Circle #2. Once complete the club transitions back to the front of the body and the sequence is repeated.
#1 – Indian Clubs Straight Arm Front Circles Combination with Body Turn Transitions
The arms and clubs never stop moving in this combination. The transitions are made with body turns and change the direction of the swing.
#2 – Indian Clubs Two Count Transitions
The heart-shaped swing combination starts with Outward making a transition to Parallel Right to Inward to Parallel Left.
#3 – Indian Clubs 4 Count Follow Combination
Four Count Follow combination also known as Windmills can be swung outward, parallel left and right and inward. The idea is that one club must point up when the other club points down.
#4 – Indian Clubs – Sim D. Kehoe
Indian Clubs Sim D. Kehoe combination – Exercise #16 Variation – Alternating Inner Back Circle and Front Moulinet transitions.
#5 – Indian Clubs Double Circles
Indian Clubs Double Straight and Bent Arm Lunges combination with Body Turn transitions. Parallel Reel transitions and a few Arm Rolls for good measure.
#6 – Indian Clubs Inverted Heart Shapes
Indian Clubs Inverted Heart Shapes combination using Straight Arm Front and Back Hip Circles.
#7 – Hungarian Hammer
Swinging the Hungarian Hammer creates a combination of the Mace-Gada and the Kettlebell swing. It is an amazing grip tool, as your hands have to reposition with each swing. The hammer is swung at full length behind the back, and then the hand is allowed to slide to half-length to swing the hammer between the legs. As the hammer swings back up the grip on the handle is released and re-gripped at the end for the next backswing.
#8 Mace-Gada
Mace-Gada, 10-2 Clockwise and Anticlockwise Body Turn transitions followed by Squats.
#9 Persian Meels
Persian Meels – The 4 count, one Meel swings at a time and the other is stationary. The Meels are swung around the body with the spine acting as the pivot point. The shoulders are rotated by transferring the body weight from one foot to the other using footwork.
Persian Meels – The 2 count, both Meels swing and move together. As above the spine is the centre point, and the feet do not move. The Meels swing is powered by shoulder rotation alone.
