Jori Clubs at Suria Akhara
Jori Clubs at Suria Akhara are large, tall and bulky, the height often reaching mid-chest, roughly the same length as a Gada.
Preparing to Swing Jori
Training for swinging Jori Clubs involves a lot of single-handed Gada Mace work first for warming up, usually starting with twenty 360 style swings over each shoulder, first using a 10kg, 15kg and 20kg Gada.
Two Jori
Once the warm-up is done the athlete progresses to Jori Clubs using the same weights as the Gada, but now everything is doubled up using two clubs.
Three ways to Load Jori onto the Shoulders
Have you ever wondered how Jori Clubs are loaded onto the shoulders?
#1 – Partner Method
Ask a training partner to help you.
#2 – Elevated Method
Stand on a small narrow brick wall, wide enough for placing one foot in front of the other. The wall has to be narrow so the clubs won’t hit it when swung up and onto the shoulders.
You have to be able to swing the clubs backwards and forward once or twice and then up and load them onto the shoulders.
Leap from the wall with the clubs loaded on the shoulders, re-balance and continue swinging the clubs on the dirt floor.
#3 – Elevated WOBBLE and LEAP method
The first prerequisite is an uneven dirt floor, plus a fairly large stone that will not lie flat and wobbles when stood on.
The rest is straightforward as in the previous method, simply swing the clubs backwards and forward, while your feet are wobbling on the stone.
Then swing the Jori onto your shoulders. Leap from the wall with the clubs loaded, land on the floor in a horseman position making sure that your head is well back to avoid catching your ears.
Finally re-balance and continue swinging the clubs on the dirt floor.
